Whats the Best Way to Learn? eLearning vs Classroom Training

Edmonton, Alberta. – May 2017Bastion Safety Solutions

Do you remember camping when you were a kid?  Remember the campground water pump…much like the one pictured above.  If you’re local well was anything like the dozen I’ve worked with…the “input to output” ratio was pretty lop sided.  I must have pulled the lever 500 times to get half a liter of water.

I’m sure these pumps weren’t actually hooked up to a “well”…they were just used to get me out of Mom & Dad’s hair…

Fast forward to 2017.  Times have changed since I was a kid.  Now, I can fire up a high-volume pump and fill a 500-liter tank in minutes.  Oh, the water pumps are still in the campground…but you’d be wasting a lot of time and effort…and I mean A LOT of time and effort to get 500 liters of water out of a hand pump.

eLearning vs Classroom Training: Why It’s Time to Make the Change.

The whole pump scenario bears a striking resemblance to workplace training.

Conventional Training much like the campground water pump is burdened huge overhead costs, including facility rentals, minimum, and maximum class sizes, geographical location, travel time, per diem, non-productive time, inconsistent delivery, and communication issues.

eLearning (online training), the “High-Volume Pump” really starts to “Pull Away” as a solution when you realize that it overcomes almost all the constraints of conventional training.  Unlimited participants,  unrestrained delivery schedules, pay as you go regardless of location, built in accountablity and reductions of 66% in non-productive time.  All this, and your and your message is delivered consistently every time.

Rationale for the Change

Opposition to eLearning is not uncommon, but even in the face of people and industries that fail to see how to leverage it, visionaries are busy creating the future of learning.  Indeed, the future is already here, with prestigious schools such as Stanford, The University of Alberta, and Duke using platforms like Coursera® to host & deliver their programs.

If eLearning still doesn’t give you the warm and fuzzies, consider the US department of education’s study in 2010, which illustrated that there is little discernable difference in outcomes between online training (eLearning) and conventional training. (U.S.Department of Education., 2010)

As the signs of recession relent, and the spring / summer construction season approaches, companies that have been long starved of capital will once again begin the most expensive part of their project journeys.  Call it what you want…onboarding, ramp up, orientations, employee training…it’s an industry requirement.

Employers will now proceed to dump hours by the thousands into non-productive, non-reimbursable time onboarding and orienting new workers while their HR and training staff struggle to carry the load.  After all, who wants to carry overhead staff to deal with overhead costs?  Keep it to a minimum, right?

Conventional training providers are rubbing their hands together, waiting to cash in, (classroom training programs charge more to keep the lights on and lease paid for than the actual program that is being delivered) Bastion Safety Solutions has been “back in the lab” developing online onboarding, occupational and industry specific training programs that will drop your overall training costs by up to 52%, not only that…but they’ll teach you how to leverage it and work with you to assure your success.

If savings like that don’t turn your head, then just let me slide in and take 52% of your paycheque.  Would that grab your attention?

Why is the construction industry so dedicated to antiquated forms of training?  Especially with a workforce that is primarily transient, maintaining records and managing the training of a workforce that is constantly in flux is nothing short of hellish.

So…when it comes to filling your bucket…do you want to use a campground waterpump, or a fire hose?
